Strangeness in my backyard...

About a week ago I noticed a little red shoot poking out of the mulch right next to our new fence on the back patio. I've never seen a plant like this before, probably because I'm new to California. It grew from just a couple inches to over two feet in like a week and a half. I thought maybe it was some kind of rubber/ palm plant, but now it's displaying these beautiful bright pink flowers.

Anybody know what the heck this thing is?

I believe that it is a 'naked lady' (amaryllis belladonna ). It is a bulb and flowers late in the summer. You'll see them along the backroads all lined up in bloom. I have always loved this flower (a sign that summer does end...) and look forward to seeing them. A friend once had a field full of them and the sight was awe-inspiring. They smell good too!

Judy's right, it's a Naked Lady - called that because it appears before the leaves emerge - they'll come later! Enjoy!

Thank you Judy and zoomie! I was quite perplexed. It really is a very pretty flower. Husband was quite amused by the "Naked Lady" name!

Yesterday my husband & I were out running errands in the car, I spied these flowers blooming along the road and said "Look, naked ladies!".. Yes, this is a way to test your guy's FASTEST reflexes!! You've never seen a head turn so quick and a neck strain so-o-o hard!! (Yep, fun.....!)
